Things To Know: Hair Relaxers

As a black woman, you’ve undoubtedly gotten a relaxer at some point or have been pressured by someone you know – and possibly someone you don’t know – to get a relaxer. To perm, or not to perm, that is the question, especially within the black community – and apparently within the workplace. You may know what a relaxer is, but do you know the details about this timeless service? Here’s what you need to know about hair relaxers:

First, a little history lesson. Garret Augustus Morgan accidentally invented the perm in 1909. He was trying to ease the friction on his sewing machine and noticed his invention doubled as straightening cream. His findings laid the foundation for the hair relaxer, although this “creamy crack” has significantly evolved since its creation over a century ago.

What is a relaxer?

A relaxer is a powerful chemical agent that physically breaks the protein bonds within the strands to straighten out curls and kinks. There are three main types of hair relaxers on the market:

  • Lye (alkali) – The active ingredient, sodium hydroxide, makes this the strongest form available. However, it is generally used by professionals due to the speed with which it straightens the hair.

  • No Lye – Look at most home relaxer kits, and you’ll find that they are typically of the no-lye variety with the active ingredient being calcium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. This formula is gentler on sensitive scalps but can dry out the hair and cause calcium build-up. A clarifying shampoo and weekly deep conditioning treatment can prevent build-up and restore moisture to the hair.

  • Low Lye – This form of relaxer, sometimes called a texturizer, contains less than 2.5% of the active ingredient sodium hydroxide. As a much milder formula, the low lye relaxer loosens the bonds to allow for better manageability while keeping texture in the hair.

How Long Do Relaxers Last?

Relaxers are permanent – hence, the alternative name “perm.” However, the hair growth that grows in is your natural texture, requiring relaxer touch-ups every 6 to 12 weeks depending on your preference and how fast your hair grows.

**Beware of relaxing too frequently as it could lead to over-processing which causes thinning and breakage.

What are the benefits of a Relaxer?

If you’re considering getting a perm, you may be finding your hair unmanageable and challenging to style. Fortunately, relaxers address this issue by reducing tangles and styling time. They also diminish frizz and are the easier option when facing elements such as rain and humidity.

What are the negatives?

Chemicals weaken your hair in order to straighten the curls, leaving you more susceptible to breakage. Many women can experience a length plateau due to new growth being cancelled out by damage on the ends. Relaxed hair also proves more difficult to keep moisturized and healthy, typically resulting in dry, brittle hair.

What Should I Do Before Getting a Relaxer?

Think long and hard about whether this is the right hair choice for you. Of course, you can always go back to your roots, but be prepared for the process of growing back those inches.

DON’T WASH YOUR HAIR BEFOREHAND – we can’t stress this enough, seriously. The natural oils and build-up on your scalp actually protect you from burns and damage.

Can I DIY a Relaxer?

While most stores sell home kits, it is not recommended to DIY this service. The powerful chemicals can cause severe damage to your scalp if not properly applied or removed. Licensed professionals have the necessary knowledge about different hair types and the best techniques for applying relaxers accordingly. If you are going to use a home kit, be sure to apply a base to your scalp to protect it from burns and scabbing and move swiftly with your application.
