05 Apr Natural Hair Services Cost More, But They’re Worth It
One conversation within the natural hair community that comes up every few years is pricing, especially when inflation goes up. Even Salon Brazyl just experienced a price increase. It was inevitable. While natural hair services may be more expensive in Tampa, Florida now, my price increase comes with an even better salon experience.
Think wine and snacks with your service, education for how to keep your hair healthy at home, and most importantly, the total peace of mind you get from one-on-one appointments in an intimate environment. I also moved to a new salon space to better serve my clients.
But I get it. Many people think that natural hair services are already too expensive. A common myth is that natural hair is cheaper than relaxed hair. That’s just not true. Because truly healthy natural hair requires regular trims, good product formulas, and delicate silk presses that preserve your curls. The price reflects that.
Do you value your natural hair health?
Now, don’t get me wrong — I know that the rates for unlicensed “hair girls” doing braids and wig installs with long lists of rules and last-minute cancellations (and not even offering a proper shampoo) is getting out of hand. But this is not that.
So, consider why you might spend $400 on butt-length knotless braids as a “protective style,” but you won’t protect or restore your natural hair with a deep shampoo, conditioning treatment, and trim once you take them out.
The truth is we don’t see the value in caring for our natural hair. While it looks strong and resilient, it is actually precious, delicate, and kind of fragile. So, regular salon appointments are crucial to keeping your hair thick, strong, and healthy for years to come. Checking in with a licensed stylist can also help you catch any problems you might have with your crown (fungal overgrowth, signs of traction alopecia, etc.) Think of your natural hair appointment as a routine check-up.
5 Reasons Natural Hair Appointments Cost More
1. Stylist Experience
You can walk into any shop and get a blowout, but what does your hair look like when you wet it again. Have your curls loosened up? Is it noticeably heat damaged throughout? How many times have you sat in a chair not knowing if your stylist knows how to properly care for your hair?
Natural hair pricing reflects years of experience, training, and expertise. As a second generation cosmetology professional, I grew up caring for natural hair from a young age. More than days spent in a salon training under my mother, I also trained at the Vidal Sassoon Academy, a top institution.
Add on the 25 years of experience with healthy natural hair (and all types of hair), and the difference is noticeable after your appointment. Juicier, bouncier curls, and hair that grows like a wildfire. When it comes down to it, you’re paying for my skill set.
2. Natural hair is more delicate
Natural hair care can be a bit more tedious and time-consuming. Even a bit of detangling takes extra time to ensure you’re not just ripping through your hair.
During the wash-and-go experience, I take each curl and perfectly style it for the juiciest, most long-lasting wash and go you’ve ever had. That’s how every natural hair appointment should feel.
Styling and maintaining natural hair like this does require more patience and attention to detail. To compensate for that extra time and effort, appointments can cost a bit more.
3. Luxurious Atmosphere
Any time you spend your money, it should be an investment in yourself. Of course, your hair will look gorgeous, but the feeling of getting it done should pour into you just as much as the end result. That’s why the environment matters.
Gorgeous decor, wine, snacks and more elevate your hair appointment to a luxury experience. You should be able to sit back, relax, and completely unwind. The ambience in the salon can take a seemingly small act of self-care and transforms it into something that leaves you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. It costs to create that environment. To build a safe space you are excited to return to each visit.
4. One-on-one Appointments
How many times has your stylist sat you under the dryer and then started on another head? Even if they put it on a timer, there’s a small part of you that feels neglected.
The one-on-one experience is worth it. You get to ask any question, vent freely, and get out in time because you have your stylist’s full, undivided attention. At Salon Brazyl, I only take one client at a time for that very reason.
5. Expert education
It’s not enough to just get your hair done, you have to know how to care for it when you’re not in my chair. To save you time searching on Google, watching YouTube videos, or scrolling tiktoks, I give you all that expert education while I work.
This means taking the time to explain techniques, products, and tools. This priceless information that will keep your hair health, strong, and growing towards your hair goals. Plus, you walk away feeling empowered to care for and style your hair at home. It’s all included in the price of your appointment.
So, yes, we had to raise our prices and natural hair services may be more expensive. However, the value you get during each visit is more than any salon you’ve been to in the past. For 25 years, I’ve poured my heart into my craft, pushing to get better with each head I touch. Making sure that every woman who sits in my chair leaves feeling beautiful, powerful, and happy. And I will continue to show up at 100% every appointment to make sure your money is a true investment into your being.
